Next Steps Program Information

 NEXT STEPS for U8 Program

SMSA is excited to introduce a new pilot program for the Spring 2020 season! SMSA’s Next Steps Program is designed for players born in 2012, who are interested in participating in a transitional program to better prepare them for playing at the next level (U9 travel).

This program does not replace the current U8 recreational program, but rather, offers another avenue for player development.  We have provided information on the Next Steps program below, and will be holding an informational session to provide an overview of the program and answer any questions that you may have. We strongly encourage anyone interested in learning more about the Next Steps program to attend!

Beginning in the Fall 2019 season, the U8 rec program was changed from a 4 v. 4 to a 5 v. 5 co-ed format in order to give the players more variety in the teams that they played as well as to assist the players in learning field placement and developing an overall understanding of the game. We believe that the introduction of the Next Steps program will further provide opportunities for our U8 players to prepare for the next level and is a great opportunity for seasoned U8 players who are ready for something more!

Players participating in the Next Steps program will play against other U8 local teams at the same level. Practices will be held on weeknights two times per week (days and times TBD). Games for the Next Steps program will be held on Saturdays and game locations will rotate between the participating clubs’ home fields.

Games will be played in a 7 v. 7 format, with six players on the field and a goalkeeper. This aligns to the U9/U10 format and provides the players with an opportunity to adjust to the new field size and format in advance of the U9 and U10 levels.

Ideal team size is 8-12 players to support the 7 v. 7 format and allow for substitutes and playing time for all participants. Teams will likely be co-ed but may be adjusted depending on how many players register in a particular season.  It is intended for the Next Steps program to be open registration and not assessment based. However, please understand that if there is an overwhelming interest in this new program, and more players register than what we can roster for the SMSA Next Steps team, there may be an informal session held to ensure that all interested players are placed on a U8 team that is developmentally appropriate for their ability level.

While this program is designed for players born in 2012, who will be transitioning to U9 next year, some 2013 birth year players may also be accepted into the program if space permits and upon approval. If you have a player born in 2013 and are interested in Next Steps, please email our Registrar, Laura Eckert, at [email protected]. Registration will only be open on our website for players born in 2012.

To register online for the Next Steps program, please go to SMSA’s website at and log into your account. Click available programs next to your players name and select “Next Steps” to proceed through the registration process. Registration is open now through March 6th.

Registration fees are non-refundable & includes a uniform shirt. Please be sure to select the correct shirt size during registration. We regret that exchanges can not be made later.

Questions may be directed to [email protected].
