Welcome Coaches

Thank you for volunteering with your time with SMSA to help coach and support our youth in learning to love the game of soccer! As a youth soccer coach, you have the privilege of positively influencing children as they learn about sports, teamwork, healthy lifestyles, and life lessons. There are a few things that SMSA will need in order to get you ready to coach this season!

Clearances / Background Checks (Required)

Clearances - SMSA MUST have a complete set of clearances on file to work with youth. Click here for information on the required clearances.

State Registration & Trainings (Required)

State Registration & Requirements - All of our Board Members, Travel Coaches and Team Managers are required by the state to take two online web courses on Concussions and Abuse Prevention and complete an annual Risk Management form.

Please watch this short video for instructions on how to access the Got Sport system for the first time and complete your Risk Management form. Link to GotSport system

From your dashboard, you can access and manage all of your clearance and training requirements. Select “More Info” next to each requirement to upload your applicable clearance documents. Remember, clearances must be current within 5 years.

If you have already completed a CDC concussion training or Safesport training for another sport or activity, and have a certificate of completion that is current, you may submit that in lieu of taking the trainings required.

Once you have created your account you can log back in at any time by going to the Link to GotSport system to update and manage your requirements.

US Soccer Training (Required)

US Soccer Coaching Courses - SMSA is focused on providing opportunities to continue to educate our coaches, and as a club, we want to promote and encourage you to expand your knowledge base, sharpen your skills, and support you as you prepare to coach our youth soccer players at various levels. Youth sports is about learning, developing and having fun!

ALL coaches are asked to complete the appropriate courses based on the level of coaching for the upcoming season (see table below).

You can find the US Soccer courses online at the following link -

You will need to create an account. In the left hand menu, click on Grassroots Courses. You will find the 4v4 and 7v7 course by clicking on either the in-person course or online course option.

Please note, there is a fee associated with the 4v4 and 7v7 courses. SMSA will reimburse costs associated with these trainings upon receipt of the completion certificate. To receive reimbursement for the cost of the course, please email a copy of your completion certificate to the appropriate club contact, as indicated in the table above.

As a club, for our present and future, we want to focus on the concept that smarter coaching is paramount to growing our club to be competitive in all levels. Because it will be free to you, except for your time, this is an excellent way to get some coaching skills and experience which will be greatly beneficial to your players, your team, and the program as a whole.

The Build Out Line

TheU.S. Soccer Player Development Initiatives(PDI) outlined rules and methodology for small-sided games. Part of these initiatives include a build out line for 7v7 play.

In the below two videos, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Technical Director Mike Barr explains the reasoning behind the build out line and proper coaching techniques to instill when playing 7v7.
